Heinrich Ernst (von) Peymann (born May 22, 1737 in Rotenburg / Wümme, † January 28, 1823 in Rendsburg ) was a German general in the Danish service .

Life

Peymann came from the Duchy of Bremen . Like his brother Christian Friderich Hermann Peymann, he was in the service of the Danish King Christian VII and, as Major General, he was in command of Copenhagen during the British bombing of Copenhagen in 1807 . In order to avert the complete destruction of Copenhagen, Peymann, who was wounded in the bombardment, had to surrender the entire Danish fleet to Great Britain after a few days of fighting. About 30 percent of the city was already destroyed and 2000 civilians perished as a result of the war.

After Christian VII's death, Peymann was succeeded by Friedrich VI. In 1808 before a court martial, which, due to the impermissible (but under the circumstances, inevitable) surrender of Peymann, made the following decision: "Major-General Heinrich Ernst Peymann has forfeited his honor and his life, and his goods have been confiscated." The king softened the sentence on January 18, 1809, so that Peymann could end his life in freedom in Rendsburg .
