Ernst Szebedits

Ernst Szebedits (* 1951 ) is a German film producer .

Life

Ernst Szebedits came to film through commercial training and a degree in pedagogy. After doing media education and working as a film and media consultant, he took over the management of the Frankfurt Film House . Together with Karl Baumgartner and Jürgen Franke, he founded Pegasos Filmverleih- und Produktion GmbH in 1996, which was later sold to the Kinowelt Group .

With Elena Trifonova as a partner, he has been running the “neue pegasos filmproduktion” (Frankfurt) since 2006, whose focus is on the production and co-production of international feature and documentary films for cinema and TV in the arthouse sector. For many years he was chairman of the Hessian Film Industry Association .

From July 2011 to December 2019, he was a director of the Wiesbaden- based Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation . In his function, Szebedits campaigned for the digitization of German film heritage , of which the Murnau Foundation maintains a significant part. The inventory includes 6,000 titles from the German Empire to the post-war period in the Federal Republic of Germany. Under his aegis, the Murnau Foundation took over the distribution and distribution of its films from Transit Film . The future task, the systematic digitization of the analog film stock, could also be started from 2018. Digitally restored classics like Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari , Varieté , Der müde Tod or Münchhausen attracted strong public interest. The restorations premiered at the Berlinale , the Munich Film Festival and the UFA Film Nights, among others . In the summer of 2019, he announced his departure to retire.

Since 2018 he has been chairman of the Wiesbaden cultural advisory board.
