Ernst von Wettin († between 1594 and 1596) was captain of the Wittenberg Fortress and owner of Jessen Castle.

Life

He came from the ministerial family von Wettin, which should not be confused with the House of Wettin . a. Had possessions in Maxdorf near Koethen and Gatterstädt.

In 1567 Ernst von Wettin was a captain in the Saxon military service.

By 1573 at the latest, Ernst von Wettin can be identified as the new captain in Wittenberg . He was u. a. decisively involved in the arrest of Caspar Peucer on April 1, 1574 together with the then mayor of Wittenberg. In the New Year's Gazette of the Leipzig City Library and Archives , Volume 1, 1906, Ernst von Wettin is described as a bad jailer.

In 1574 he bought Bernhard Spiegel's manor Jessen along with pertinances, including a. a. also Schützberg belonged.

On August 10, 1575, Ernst von Wettin was enfeoffed by Elector August of Saxony with the Jessen manor and accessories. In his third testament, Elector Friedrich gave this castle to his two illegitimate sons Friedrich and Sebastian along with 500 thalers each year.

He had appointed the two brothers of Captain Ernst von Wettin, Gerwisch and Christoph von Wettin, and his two cousins ​​Melchior and Ernst von Wettin, to be co-leaners at Jessen Castle, and he had given his daughters marriage property at Jessen Castle, which was also used.

He had u. a. the son of the same name Ernst von Wettin the Younger and left behind the Wettin Foundation named in the records of church visits in the former Saxon spa district of Karl Pallas .

Shortly before his death, he sold Schloss Jessen and its accessories to his son-in-law from the von dem Knesebeck family due to debts .
