Tarnewitz test site

The Tarnewitz test site (also: E -stelle Tarnewitz) on the artificially created Tarnewitz peninsula at the eastern end of the Boltenhagen Bay was used by the German Air Force to test aircraft and on-board weapons until the end of World War II .

history

The story of the E -stelle Tarnewitz began in 1933 in the Baltic resort of Boltenhagen , when the Reichsluftwaffe came across the pristine sandbank on the Baltic coast in search of a suitable place for weapons tests. Construction work began as early as September 1935. There are dikes piled and sheet piles set. With a huge technical effort for the time, the peninsula was washed up with sea sand and completely sealed with a bitumen cover. After the construction of the halls and laboratories, the testing center started operations in 1937.

The E -stelle was responsible for testing the weapon systems developed by the industry and, in close connection, for further development until they were ready for use. The most favorable installation variants of weapons and their systems were also determined on the basis of the experience gained in the field. In addition, the testing was done by machine guns , cannons , board missiles and special equipment. Aircraft of the types Me 262 , Bf 110 , Fw 190 and Ba 349 were mainly used for equipment tests. Shortly before the end of the war in 1945, the most important test aircraft were transferred to Schleswig-Holstein . American troops eventually took the E post. This was followed by the English and later the Red Army , who blew up the access roads, parts of the runway and the remaining facilities on the site.

Post war history

After nobody cared about the peninsula for several years, it was taken over by the maritime police in 1952. The object was later assigned to the 4th Flotilla of the People's Navy , which set up a base on the site. In 1963 the coastal border brigade took possession of the area, which Tarnewitz kept under control until the NVA was dissolved in 1990. During this time, the port was renovated and numerous new buildings and facilities were built. The Bundeswehr took over the property in 1990, but soon withdrew. In the meantime, parts of the peninsula, today's area of the White Wiek , have been expanded into a marina with an adjoining hotel complex and bathing beach. For this purpose, all the buildings and facilities erected by the NVA were demolished. The greater part of the peninsula was designated as a nature reserve Tarnewitzer Huk .
