ErsatzMusika is a Berlin folk band.

tape

The band was formed in 2006 by singer and accordionist Irina Doubrovskaja. All members of the band come from Russia and were active there as musicians in the underground scene before they emigrated in the early 1990s. Irina Doubrovskaja writes and composes all of the band's pieces.

The artist, originally a painter and poet, said of the beginning of her musical career and the band: “At first I just started shooting for a small group of friends with the memory of those postcards in the back of my mind that we had in the Soviet Union (...). Actually a letter of votes. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, many of our friends have been scattered around the world. The idea was to make music to share with these friends. But the more people we played this music, the more believed we should publish our voice letters. "

In April 2009, ErsatzMusika took part in the 12th Kassel World Music Festival.

ErsatzMusika publishes their works on the label Asphalt Tango .

reception

The songs Unrecantable with English lyrics, released in 2009, were presented in April 2009 on WDR 5's Scala program . It was said that the musicians created "with vocals, guitars, bass, percussion, keyboards, music boxes, cello, xylophone and accordion sounds that convey the feeling of attending an extraterrestrial chanson evening".

The Kassel-Zeitung attributes the band the format of “becoming cult”.

In connection with the first CD Voiceletter, the BBC spoke of "reminiscences of gulags and oppression", but called songs unrecantable "more joyful".

The Independent emphasized that "the melancholy sound of singer-composer-keyboardist Irina Doubrovskaya" was "irresistible".
