The apparition of Soriano is a painting by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri , called il Guercino .

presentation

The painting represents an event in the iconography of the Dominican Order: the apparition of Mary to a Dominican of the monastery of Soriano Calabro , which is said to have taken place on the night of September 15, 1530.

Mary appeared to the lay brother Lorenzo da Grotteria with Mary Magdalene and St. Catherine of Alexandria . At the end of the apparition, a painting remained in the hands of the astonished monk, depicting the founder of the order, St. Dominic , who was holding a book in one hand and a lily in the other, symbols of the wisdom of the members of the order or represent their purity.

history

The painting of the apparition of Soriano des Guercino was ordered from the artist by the consul Bernardino Borno from Verona. The work was installed a year later as an altarpiece in the church of the Dominican monastery in Bolzano . In 1785 the picture was moved to the parish church. In 1979 the picture was re-erected in a specially built chapel in the Dominican Church of Bolzano. There are three preparatory sketches for this picture, two of which are in the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin , and the third is privately owned in Stuttgart.
