Erwin Fabian
Erwin Fabian (born November 5, 1915 in Berlin ; † January 19, 2020 ) was a graphic artist and sculptor of German-Jewish descent living in Melbourne .
Life
In order to qualify for admission to the art academy after dropping out of high school, Fabian completed an apprenticeship as a painter . The anti-Jewish laws of the National Socialists prevented students from studying. In 1938 he was able to save himself from persecution in National Socialist Germany to London . In 1940 he was brought to Australia as an "enemy alien" and interned there. Joining the Australian Army in 1942 made it possible to leave the camp. Since 1946 he worked as a commercial artist. At the end of the 1950s he returned to London. Since 1962 Fabian lived again in Australia and from 1982 onwards he was regularly working in London.
The first objects made from scrap metal were made in the 1960s. In 2016, the Peter Wilmot Thompson Foundation's Wesenberg sculpture park opened , including current works by Erwin Fabian and some pictures by his father, the painter Max Fabian .
