The Erzherzog-Wilhelm-Kaserne (also Wilhelmskaserne ) was located in the 2nd district of Vienna , Leopoldstadt , in Vorgartenstrasse 223 near the exhibition street and the Prater .

The barracks were built as an artillery barracks as part of the so-called barracks transaction from 1894 to 1896 and named after Archduke Wilhelm , inspector general of the entire kuk artillery, who died in 1894 . With the archduke Albrecht barracks , an infantry barracks built at the same time on the other side of the exhibition street, the talk was of the Prater barracks . The Erzherzog-Wilhelm-Kaserne, to be found half to the left as seen from the exhibition street leading to it, was also called half-left barracks among soldiers .

After the First World War it was used by the Federal Army , 1938–1945 by the German Wehrmacht and 1945–1955 by the Red Army . (The 2nd district belonged to the Soviet sector of Vienna .)

During the Second World War the barracks were almost completely destroyed, only two buildings remained. In 1963, a part of the property on Engerthstrasse was separated for the construction of the main fire station Leopoldstadt of the City of Vienna .

The NBC defense school as well as commando troops that were deployed in the nearby Ministry of Defense ( disposal company ) were stationed in the part that remained in the army .

In 2005 it was decided to close the barracks and sell the property to the Vienna city administration. The building complex was completely demolished at the end of 2005. On the area freed as a result, a network of four residential projects was built with green and open spaces; the city of Vienna spoke of the establishment of an “open Grätzl ”.
