In 1890 Rechtenbach, which still belonged to Stegen, was united with Eschbach in exchange for Reckenberg. On January 1, 1975, the municipality of Stegen was formed by the union of the two municipalities of Stegen and Eschbach in the Black Forest.

Hugmichelhof, Heidenhof older form

The Eschbachtal with its side valleys was mentioned for the first time in 1112 and belonged for the most part to the monastery of St. Peter in the Black Forest . The smaller part, initially the Gitzenhof Dinghof of the Einsiedeln monastery, finally came to the barons of Sickingen until they sold their property to the state of Baden in 1808. The two parts of Eschbach were united in 1811 to form a municipality in the Freiburg Landamt. From February 23, 1973 until it was united with Stegen, the community had the addition of the name in the Black Forest.
