The Eshtaol Forest ( Hebrew יער אשתאול, Ja'ar Eshtaol) is one of the largest forests in Israel , near the capital Jerusalem . The forest is north of the town of Bet Shemesh , near the Newe Shalom known as the "Peace Village" . Like most forests in Israel, the forest was planted by the Jewish National Fund. The forest covers 12,000 dunams (12 km²)

The forest is named after the biblical place Eshtaol: "Then the spirit of the Lord began to drive him around in the camp of Dans between Zora and Eshtaol" ( Judge 13.25  EU ). The moshav Eschtaol of the same name is also located in the same place .

The reforestation of the area began immediately after the War of Independence , by Yemeni Jews who settled nearby. The British had already done the preliminary work by planting pine groves in the vicinity of Jerusalem. After decades of forestry, it is now a species-rich forest area that is particularly popular as a natural recreation area.

Together with other forests such as the Forest of the Martyrs , the Eshtaol Forest forms a green belt around the city of Jerusalem.
