Donkey ride
The donkey ride was an honor punishment known since the 9th century and mainly used in the Middle Ages . The punished man was led through the town on a donkey , sometimes backwards and naked. The punitive procession was used for public disgrace and abuse.
This form of delinquent shame could z. B. meet adulterers , perjurers , traitors , prisoners and both women who beat their husbands and men who were beaten. Even anti-pope John XVI. was subjected to such a disgraceful procession.
Donkey rides took place in the Orient as well as in European countries ; the last in Germany is from 1814.
The donkey ride was often given along with other punishments such as disgraceful masks and pillory .
The disgraceful donkey , also seat pillory or disgraceful chair, was a wooden frame that stood in a public square. The victim had to sit on it.
