Christoph Weiditz (* 1498 in Strasbourg , † 1560 in Augsburg ) was a German painter , medalist , picture carver and goldsmith .

Life

The family relationship between Christoph Weiditz and his brother Hans Weiditz and the sculptor Hans Wydyz has not been proven. He spent a large part of his life in Strasbourg and Augsburg. There he created small sculptures and especially portrait medals , 117 of which are still known today.

Christoph Weiditz was in Spain between 1528 and 1529 . Presumably he was staying at the imperial court of Charles V during this time . It was at this time that Hernán Cortés made drawings for his costume book and the famous first European pictures of Indians , Aztec ball players , who demonstrated their art in Spain.

Weiditz is important as one of the four most important German Renaissance medalists alongside Hans Schwarz , Friedrich Hagenauer and Matthes Gebel .
