from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Schwarz (* 1492 in Augsburg ; † around 1550) was a German medalist and sculptor .

Hans Schwarz lived a large part of his life in Augsburg. He came from an old Augsburg family, his great-grandfather was the mayor Ulrich Schwarz . He learned in the workshop of the sculptor Stephan Schwarz. In 1516 he opened his own workshop. In his younger years he worked with the painter Hans Holbein the Elder. friend, who often portrayed him, which certainly had an influence on his work.

In 1518 all important political personalities met in Augsburg for the Reichstag . Hans Schwarz took advantage of this. That year he created 25 medals from personalities who had come to Augsburg. In addition to the princes, he portrayed Jakob Fugger , Jakob Welser, the humanist Konrad Peutinger and the painter Hans Burgkmair . The need for representation of the princes, but also of rich bourgeoisie, gave rise to the desire for show coins and medals. From 1519 to 1520 he worked in Nuremberg . There he was expelled from the city because he got into a quarrel with the imperial city council . After stays in Worms and Heidelberg , he lived temporarily again in Nuremberg, but then a lot abroad, in Poland , at the Danish court and in Paris . After his stay in Paris in 1532, where he made a medal for the court painter Jean Clouet , the dates and places of his life are unknown. A death is expected around 1550.

Like the other German “counterfeiters” of that time, he created his medals from a wooden model, while the Italians mostly made their cast models in wax .

Schwarz's medals show a strong sense of reality. His life's work comprises 175 medals. Schwarz is considered one of the most important German Renaissance medalists alongside Friedrich Hagenauer , Christoph Weiditz , Matthes Gebel and Hans Daucher .
