Esmeralda is a municipality and a city in the Cuban province of Camagüey . It is divided into the Barrios Caonao, Guanaja, Jaronú, Quemado and Tabor. The local economy is mainly based on the cultivation of sugar cane , coconuts , pineapples , oranges and tobacco . Cayo Romano, one of the islands of the Jardines del Rey , is located north of Esmeralda. It can be reached via the bay of la Jiguey ( Bahia de Jiguey ).

Demographics

In 2004 the community Esmeralda had 29,953 inhabitants. With a total area of ​​1480 km², the city has a population density of 1230 inhabitants / km².
