Esperia sulphurella , also known as the sulfur yellow deadwood butterfly , is a butterfly from the family of rottenwood moths (Oecophoridae).
features
The wingspan is between 12 and 16 millimeters. They have a dark brown basic color. Their forewings show a pale yellow markings. The predominantly pale yellow hind wings are colored dark brown at the tips. The antennae have a white band about two-thirds long.
Occurrence
The species is native to the Palearctic . Their occurrence extends across Central and Southern Europe to North Africa. The species is also represented in the British Isles . In contrast, it is absent in Denmark and the rest of Scandinavia. Esperia sulphurella was introduced into California more than 40 years ago.
Way of life
They are often found on the edges of forests and hedges at dawn. The first adults appear at the end of February. The actual flight time lasts from the beginning of April to June. The caterpillars develop in dead wood as well as under the tree bark, especially of oaks .
