Essay Recordings is a German record label specializing in modern Eastern European music. The musicians of the label coined the term Bucovina Club , but also stand for traditional and modern Klezmer .
Well-known representatives of the label in this context are Amsterdam Klezmer Band , Boom Pam , OMFO and last but not least Shantel , who drew a lot of attention to his music and label with his successful releases, especially under the Bucovina Club brand . With Binder & Krieglstein and Señor Coconut , who is known for his salsa retuning of well-known rock hits like Smoke on the Water and Smooth Operator , other important interpreters of experimental music are under contract with the label.
history
The label was founded in 1995 by Stefan Hantel ( Shantel ) and Daniel Haaksman in Frankfurt am Main . After a few record releases, the company paused between 1998 and 2002. In 2003, the label was reactivated by its founders with the release of the Bucovina Club project Shantels. As a result, musicians and groups were contracted who had the reinterpretation of traditional and mostly Eastern European dance music as a common denominator.
In 2004 the CD Rio Baile Funk Favela Booty Beats was finally released, a compilation on the new music genre of the Baile Funk , which originated in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro and was practically unknown outside of Brazil until then. The overview of key players in this new style of music, which this sampler presented for the first time, attracted great international attention and made Baile Funk popular worldwide. The piece Popozuda Rock'n'Roll , which was published outside of Brazil for the first time on this CD, was used by Coca-Cola in Germany for a commercial. Daniel Haaksman, who moved to Berlin in 1998 and works as a DJ, music producer and journalist (including FAZ), was responsible for selecting the first and second edition of the CD. In 2004 Haaksman left the company and founded his own music label Man Recordings , on which he continues to publish Baile Funk and the most important representatives of this style, such as Edu K, DJ Sandrinho, Deize Tigrona or the Stuttgart rapper MC Gringo u. a., signed.
