Essie Summers

Ethel Snelson "Essie" Summers (born July 24, 1912 in Christchurch , † August 27, 1998 in Taradale ) was a New Zealand writer.

Life

Summers was born into the family of Ethel Snelson and Edwin Summers, who had just immigrated from Newcastle upon Tyne , England, on Bordesley Street in Christchurch . She was proud of both her British ancestry and her New Zealand citizenship. She left school at age 14 when her butcher father got into financial difficulties. She worked in clothing stores for a few years and later used her experience in the romantic Romens for which she became known.

She first met her future pastor, William Flett, when she was 13 years old, but they did not get married until 13 years later. The mother of two, William and Elizabeth wrote numerous short stories, poetry and newspaper columns before selling her first novel to Mills & Boon in 1956 .

In total, she wrote 55 novels that have been translated into 25 languages. The total circulation of her works in 105 countries is over 19 million copies. Her books are mostly romantic family and romance novels in which conflicts between partners play only a minor role.

Summers died in Taradale on August 27, 1998 .
