The Esslinger Verlag JF Schreiber GmbH was a German children's book publisher based in Esslingen am Neckar and belonged to the Klett Group . It emerged in 1988 from the Schreiber-Verlag, which was founded in 1831 . The founder of the publishing house was Jakob Ferdinand Schreiber (* 1809 in Ulm, † 1868). The publishing house has belonged to Thienemann-Esslinger Verlag since 2014 .

history

Initially, the publisher printed art papers that showed, among other things, partial views of Esslingen and its surroundings. After a short time Schreiber turned to picture books and presentation sheets with religious motifs and prints with scientific content for children. The publisher's success grew rapidly. In 1833 Schreiber began producing colored illustrations for teaching and school purposes. The first children's books appeared in 1840. One of the highlights of the publishing history was the publication of the movable picture books by the Munich artist Lothar Meggendorfer . In addition, the “Meggendorfer Blätter” were published by Schreiber, which around 1900 were among the best-known humorous-satirical magazines in Germany. At the same time, the popular Schreiber cut-out sheets were produced. They included dress-up dolls, Christmas cribs, models of ships and planes.

In 1906 the publishing house was able to win over the author and painter Sibylle von Olfers . Her children's book Something from the Root Children became the publisher's best-selling publication and is still offered as a reprint today . The Schreiber family ran the publishing house until 1988, when the successor company has belonged to the Klett Group in Stuttgart. The renowned Alfred Hahn's Verlag from Leipzig joined the company in 1996 and has since supplemented the program with children's book classics such as The Bunny School .

In 1997, after the great success of the picture book Alles meins! by Nele Moost and Annet Rudolph with the main character of the little raven sock added non-book articles to the range for the first time and later expanded ever more. Since 1998 the company has been operating under the name Esslinger Verlag JF Schreiber GmbH .

Esslinger Verlag today

The company's program focus is still on the production of beautiful and sophisticated picture books. This includes both elaborately designed fairy tales and classic editions as well as imaginatively illustrated modern picture books. The reprints of the classics from Schreiber Verlag and Alfred Hahn's Verlag are also an important part of the program. Today the traditional company is one of the most important German children's book publishers. It works with outstanding artists and presents itself in stores with a wide range of books and non-book articles. It also develops international co-productions.

In Esslingen, the JF Schreiber - Museum presents the history and publications of the publisher.

At the beginning of 2014, the previous individual publishers Thienemann and Esslinger Verlag merged, with the Blumenstrasse location in Stuttgart (previous seat of Thienemann) becoming the joint headquarters.
