Essyllt
Essyllt [ essiɬt ], also Esyllt , is the name of a legendary figure from the Celtic mythology of Wales . She is the wife of King March fab Meirchiawn and the aunt of Drystan fab Tallwch , who falls in love with her. In the courtly Tristan novel, it corresponds to the figure of Iseut ( old French ) or Isolt ( Middle High German ), in modern translations Isolde .
The origin of the name Essyllt is controversial. It could go back to a hypothetical form * Adsiltia with the meaning "the looked at" (after Kymrisch syllu - "look at"). The names Iseut, Isolt and Isolde are probably not of Celtic but Germanic origin. The view is sometimes expressed that the Celtic form also goes back to a Germanic model.
