The Estádio de Pituaçu is a football stadium in the Brazilian city of Salvador da Bahia . It offers space for 32,157 spectators and served as the home of the EC Bahia association until the opening of the Fonte Nova Arena .

The Estádio Metropolitano Roberto Santos, commonly known as Estádio de Pituaçu, was built in 1979 in Salvador da Bahia , the capital of the northern Brazilian state of Bahia and also the third largest city in Brazil , and opened on March 11 of the same year. For the first game in the new stadium, the local club EC Bahia and Fluminense de Feira met for a friendly. In the game, which ended in a 2-0 for the hosts, Douglas scored the first goal in the new stadium. Since then, EC Bahia has played most of its home games at the Estádio de Pituaçu. For games with a larger number of spectators, the club moved to the Estádio Octávio Mangabeira, known as Estádio Fonte Nova , until it was demolished in 2010 after a partial collapse with several deaths. The EC Bahia has been a Brazilian soccer champion to this day, winning the title in 1988. In addition, winning the Taça Brasil in 1959 , which served as a championship before the introduction of the Campeonato Brasileiro de Futebol , which means that the EC Bahia was twice champion . The Bahia State Championship has also been won 43 times. EC Bahia is currently playing in Série A , the top Brazilian football league, after being promoted from Série B in the past season (2010) .

The Estádio de Pituaçu can now accommodate 32,157 spectators. An expansion of the stadium to 34,000 spectators is planned in the foreseeable future. The stadium capacity was increased in 2009. Due to the planned demolition of the Estádio Fonte Nova, the capacity was increased from just under 20,000 spectator seats to 32,157 seats. The record crowd in the stadium was achieved when, on April 2, 1995, EC Vitória won the city duel of Salvador da Bahia 2-0 against EC Bahia and 18,418 spectators came to the stadium. In 2009 a qualifier for the soccer world championship in South Africa took place in the Estádio de Pituaçu. In this game, the defeated Brazilian team of Chile with 2: 4.
