Mapua is a place in the Tasman District on the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

Mapua is located around 16 km west of Nelson on Tasman Bay between Nelson and Richmond in the southeast and Motueka in the northwest. Rabbit Island is east of the town and the New Zealand State Highway 60 passes the town just under 2 km to the west.

history

Bones and tool finds prove that the area around Mapua was settled by the Māori early on . Since there is no evidence of weapon manufacturing or cannibalism , it is believed that New Zealand's indigenous people lived quite peacefully in this area. The lack of war experience may have been their undoing when the Māori leader Te Rauparaha , coming from the North Island, subjugated the northern areas of the South Island in the 1820s . After Arthur Wakefield landed in Tasman Bay on October 8, 1841 , he found only a small Māori population there.

In 1854, James S. Cross bought land in what is now Mapua , and James Heatly was the first settler in the region. The port area was known as the Western Entrance and the community as Seaton , when FI Ledger promoted the foundation of the city around 1910 and chose the name Mapua for the place . The first post office was opened in 1912, and in the following years Mapua was connected to the regional road network.

population

At the 2013 census, the town had inhabitants in 2013, 7.2% more than at the 2006 census.

Ecological damage

In the 20th century, the place was one of the most polluted areas in New Zealand at times due to pesticide residues from a factory that has now been closed. All pollutants were removed by means of an extensive and costly decontamination of the environment .
