Estelle Balet learned to snowboard at the age of ten . Later she specialized in freeriding in the forest and in deep powder snow as well as on steep walls.
With a second place at the Xtreme Verbier 2013, she qualified for the Freeride World Tour (FWT) the following year and became vice world champion in March 2014 after the last of the six races of the season. In 2015, Balet was the youngest participant to win the world championship in snowboard freeride. In December she was named Sportswoman of the Year 2015 in the canton of Valais . She defended her title in April 2016.
On the morning of April 19, 2016, Estelle Balet died at the age of 21 in an avalanche on Le Portalet ( Mont Blanc group ) while filming a film . On Tuesday morning she flew to the summit in a helicopter with the Swiss extreme athlete Géraldine Fasnacht and a mountain guide. Carnival was the first to drive on the slope, then Estelle Balet started in a neighboring couloir . There she was hit by an avalanche that carried her about a thousand meters.
