An ester lipid is a lipid whose non-polar side chains are covalently bound via an ester bond .

Ester lipids are the most common natural form of neutral fats and membrane lipids . In contrast to ester lipids, the side chains of ether lipids are linked by an ether bond , while the non-polar side chains of sphingolipids have an amide bond. The ester lipids include the triacylglycerides , the phosphatidic acid derivatives such as phosphatidylethanolamine , phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylcholine , the glycoglycerolipids (such as digalactosyldiacylglycerols in plants and seminolipid in spermatozoa ) and the sphingolipids. The glycerophospholipid phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate is used as a messenger substance .
