Étienne Louis Geoffroy (born October 12, 1725 in Paris , † August 12, 1810 in Soissons ) was a French pharmacist and entomologist .

Geoffroy was born to Étienne François Geoffroy . His main work was Histoire abrégée des insectes qui se trouvent aux environs de Paris, dans laquelle ces animaux sont rangés suivant un ordre méthodique ( short history of the insects that can be found in the vicinity of Paris and in which these animals according to a methodical order, 1762 ) . Geoffroy struck six groups (sections) of insects before: beetles , Hemiptera , "Insectes à quatre Ailes nues or tetraptera alis nudis" ( "four-winged insects with naked wings" assembly of Hymenoptera and lacewings ), Fly and wingless insects. So he did not follow Carl von Linné's system, which was already largely established at the time , although he knew his work and often cited it. Geoffroy's work, although published after 1758, the starting point of the binary nomenclature according to Linnaeus , is not considered to be "available" for the current nomenclature of insects because he himself did not consistently use binomials as species names. Many of the names introduced by Geoffroy were later validated.

He was the father of René-Claude Geoffroy de Villeneuve .
