Ettin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An ettin (from Old English eoten 'giant') is a mythical creature with several heads that resembles a giant , ogre or troll .

The Ettin comes from English folk tales : In The Red Ettin , which was collected by the folklorist Joseph Jacobs at the end of the 19th century , a three-headed Irish giant kidnaps the daughter of the Scottish King Malcolm. A young man manages to get to the castle des Ettins, kill him and free the princess, whom he finally marries.

Probably via CS Lewis ' Chronicles of Narnia , the Ettin came into modern fantasy , where it appears above all in the various game worlds of the pen and paper role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons and its offshoots of novels and computer games ( Baldur's Gate , Neverwinter Nights ), but also in various other computer games such as NetHack , Ultima , Warcraft , Stonekeep , Witches or Guild Wars . In computer games, Ettins have two heads that often contradict each other.

The ettins in the Creatures computer games, however, are not based on this mythical creature.

In the movie Jack and the Giants (2013), there is a 2-man giant named Fallun .

In the series Stargate - Command SG-1 , the alien race Goa'uld is synonymous with Ettin.
