Eudald Jaumeandreu i Triter

Eudald Jaumeandreu i Triter (* 1774 in Barcelona ; † 1840 there ) was a Catalan economist. He is often referred to as the Adam Smith of Catalonia.

Career and life's work

Jaumeandreu was a member of the Augustinian order from 1788 until he left the monastery in 1821 . In 1805 he had earned his doctorate in theology with the work Centum propositiones decem in libros distributae quas in comitiis prov. Aragoniae ordinis Augustiniani . As a religious and priest, he represented liberal ideas as exemplified in his funeral speech for the Spanish military member and former captain general of Catalonia Luis de Lacy y Gautier after his execution in Palma in 1817.

From 1814 he was professor of economics (economia civil) first in Palma and then for economics (economia politica) at the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce (Junta de Comerç de Barcelona). From 1814 to 1824 and from 1835 to 1840 he taught this subject in Barcelona. From 1820 he also taught political law. About his numerous students such as the philosopher Ramon Martí i d'Eixalà , the writers Bonaventura Carles Aribau and Joaquim Rubió i Ors , the economists Joan Güell i Ferrer and Laureà Figuerola i Ballester , the lawyer Josep Sol i Padrís , the politician Estanislau Figueras i de Moragas , the historian Plàcid-Maria de Montoliu i de Sarriera , the lawyer Joan Illas i Vidal and the linguist Manuel Milà i Fontanals , he exerted a great influence on politics and society of his time.

Jaumeandreu was the economist of the early industrial bourgeoisie in Spain. In his work he harmonized the political constitution of Spain with the free market. He initiated a minor agricultural reform and limited the influence of guilds and guilds while rejecting high external taxes. He defined economics as the science that had to show the economic balance between public and private interests.
