Life

Bell initially sought a career as a pastor in a Baptist church . After studying at Stetson University and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, he graduated from the University of Chicago in 1903 . For seventeen years, Bell served as a pastor in Baptist churches, mostly in Texas . He traveled to Chicago in 1908 with the consent of his Fort Worth church to investigate the growing Pentecostal movement, specifically the church of William Durham. From then on, Bell turned to the Pentecostal movement and a year later left his Baptist church to take up a leadership position in a Pentecostal church in Malvern .

Bell was the editor of a monthly magazine called The Apostolic Faith (later renamed Word and Witness ). In it he published a call to Pentecostal Christians to meet for a conference in Hot Springs with the aim of founding an independent religious community. The conference is considered the starting point for the founding of Assemblies of God (AoG). Bell gave his magazine to AoG and became its first president. From 1917 to 1919 he was the editor of Pentecostal Evangel , a weekly magazine, after which he was the managing director of AoG until 1920 and finally its president again until his death in 1923.
