Eugen Märklin (born December 22, 1861 in Göppingen ; † December 21, 1947 there ) was a German entrepreneur .

Life

Eugen Märklin was the eldest son of Theodor Märklin (1817–1866) and his wife Caroline Hettich (1826–1893). In 1888, Eugen Märklin and his younger brother Karl took over the small business founded by his father and continued by his mother since his death for the production of doll kitchen equipment and toy stoves. Shortly afterwards (1888) they founded the open trading company Gebrüder Märklin . In addition to toys, Märklin initially manufactured household goods, and in 1891 acquired a factory for technical tin toys in Ellwangen . In the same year, Märklin presented the first rail-bound, at that time clockwork-driven, toy train - since then, Märklin has become a synonym for model trains. They introduced toy steam engines in 1895, electric toy trains in 1897, and a smaller gauge the following year. Sample warehouses and sales outlets were set up in London , Paris , Amsterdam , Milan and Moscow . In 1911 Märklin had a new company building built and in 1920 transformed the company into a limited liability company (abbr .: GmbH). In 1914, Märklin added metal construction kits to its range, introduced the 20-volt system in 1926 and increasingly oriented the model railways on the model of the Deutsche Reichsbahn .

Eugen Märklin's eldest son Fritz has been running the company since 1935 . Eugen Märklin died in 1947, and a few months later the company was rebuilt in the same year.
