Eugene J. Van Scott

Eugene Joseph Van Scott (born May 27, 1922 in Macedon , New York ) is an American dermatologist .

Van Scott studied at the University of Chicago with a bachelor's degree in 1945 and an MD in 1948. He completed his internship at Millard Fillmore Hospital in Buffalo (New York) and his residency in dermatology from 1949 to 1952 from the University of Chicago and was then at the University of Pennsylvania . From 1953 to 1968 he was head of dermatology at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Bethesda, Maryland . From 1968 he was a professor at Temple University , where he retired in 1989. He was also deputy director of the Skin and Cancer Hospital in Philadelphia from 1968 to 1989.

In addition to skin cancer and neoplasia , he dealt with the biology and physiology of skin cell growth and the pathogenesis of psoriasis .

In 1988 he founded the Neostrata Company.

In 1972 he received the Lasker ~ DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award for outstanding contributions to the chemotherapy of mycosis fungoides with mechlorethamine . He achieved regression in half of 75 treated patients in a study with the prospect of complete healing if treatment started early enough (before the lymph nodes are affected). He also received the American Academy of Dermatology's Lila Gruber Cancer Research Award in 1980 (which made him a Master of Dermatology in 1998 ) and the Stephen Rothman Award (Soc. Investig. Dermatology) in 1975. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) awards the Eugene J. Van Scott Award for Innovative Therapy of the Skin, named after him and endowed with $ 20,000 .
