Eugenio Balzan
Eugenio Balzan (born April 20, 1874 in Badia Polesine , Italy , † July 15, 1953 in Lugano ) was an Italian journalist and entrepreneur .
Life
Eugenio Balzan originally trained as a surveyor. From 1897 he worked initially as a proofreader and later as a journalist at Corriere della Sera . As early as 1903 he became its managing director and later co-owner. In 1933 he left Italy in opposition to fascist circles who threatened the independence of the Corriere.
Eugenio Balzan lived in Switzerland until 1950 and then returned to Italy. In 1953 he died during a stay in Switzerland at the age of 79. Three years later, his daughter Angela Lina used the inherited fortune to set up the International Balzan Foundation , which has been awarding the Balzan Prize since 1961 .
