Eugeniusz Knapik (born July 9, 1951 in Ruda Śląska ) is a Polish composer, pianist and music teacher.

Life

Knapik studied composition with Henryk Mikołaj Górecki and piano with Czesław Stańczyk at the Katowice State Music Academy . In 1976 he received a grant from the French government and continued his training as a composer with Olivier Messiaen in Paris. He is Professor of Composition, Conducting and Music Theory at the Katowice Music Academy, of which he was Rector from 2002 to 2008, and founded the Studio for Computer and Electroacoustic Music there in 1992.

As a pianist he is a specialist in works by composers of the 20th century. In a chamber music line-up he worked with the Kwartet Śląski , Konstanty Andrzej Kulka , Aureli Błaszczok , Piotr Pławner and others. From 1979 to 1989 he was a member of the Warsaw Autumn Program Committee . For many years he was a board member, from 1999 to 2003 Vice-President of the Polish Composers' Union.

In 1974 Knapik made his debut as a composer together with Andrzej Krzanowski and Aleksander Lasoń at the Młodzi Muzycy Młodemu Miastu Festival in Stalowa Wola. In the following years he won numerous prizes, including the second prize in the Young Composers Competition of the Polish Composers' Union (1976), third prize at the International Chamber Music Competition in Vienna (1977), first prize at the Młodzi Muzycy Młodemu Miastu Festival (1979) and the Stanisław Wyspiański Prize (1985). From 1988 to 1995, commissioned by Gerard Mortier , the director of the Opera la Monnaie, wrote his most extensive work, the opera trilogy The Minds of Helena Toubleyn, based on the libretti by Jan Fabre .
