Eulima glabra is the name of a worm - type from the family of eulimidae (genus Eulima ), as Ectoparasite of brittle stars live.

features

Eulima glabra has a tall, pointed, tower-shaped, very shiny and almost transparent shell , which in adult snails reaches a shell length of around 10 mm and a width of around 2.5 mm. The thread has up to 12 whorls, 3 to 4 of which are a little swollen, belong to the protoconch and often erode. The body handling is slim. In the view of the housing mouth, the outer lip forms a continuation of the thread in outline. Their edge is rounded and not sharp. The surface of the case has some irregular growth stripes and individual markings that are inclined forwards and almost straight, from which the previous position of the outer lip can be recognized. The body circumference takes up about half and the case mouth about a third of the total length of the case. The case is yellowish-white with orange-brown bands. Usually there are 3 spiral bands on every thread around the thread and 6 on the body around it. Particularly at the periphery, the spiral lines can be in the form of separate, axially bent strips.

The snail itself is white and resembles Eulima bilineata : the head is a thin protrusion, on the underside of which there is the opening of a trunk that can be turned in and out and two long, tapering antennae with eyes behind. On the right edge of the jacket there is a jacket sensor. In young, male animals, behind the right antennae, there is a long penis with a dorsal open sperm groove. Older, larger animals undergo sex reassignment surgery to a female. A penis stump remains on this. The large foot of the snail is narrow, but broad in front and has conspicuous opercular lobes behind.

Distribution and way of life

Eulima glabra is distributed in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean from the Mediterranean Sea to the western coasts of Great Britain and Ireland and the Shetland Islands , but is absent in the southern North Sea. The snail is not common. It can be found below the intertidal zone down to a depth of around 200 m.

Eulima glabra lives ectoparasitic of brittle stars .

Development cycle

Eulima glabra is first male and then female. The development presumably takes place via a freely swimming, plankton- eating Veliger stage.
