Euphorbia cryptospinosa is a species of the genus spurge ( Euphorbia ) in the family of Euphorbiaceae (Euphorbiaceae).

description

The succulent Euphorbia cryptospinosa grows as a spreading shrub and reaches a height of up to 3 meters. Shoots with round stems arise from a small, bulbous root. They reach about 1 centimeter in diameter and are provided with up to 10 ribs. There are no teeth on the ribs. The brown thorn shields are provided with very small bristles in the young stage, which can be up to 3 centimeters long and then develop strips around 2 millimeters wide. These are separated from each other by very thin furrows. The very narrow thorns are up to 3 millimeters long and enclose the shoot. They are only clearly visible on young shoots. Stipule spines are absent.

Single and simple cymes are formed. These are almost seated and brightly colored blood red. The cyathia reach 3.5 millimeters in diameter. Four rectangular nectar glands are formed on the central cyathium, and five on the lateral cyathia . They each butt against each other. The bluntly lobed fruit is about 2.5 millimeters long and 3.5 millimeters wide. The almost spherical seed is about 1.5 millimeters in size and is covered with warts.

Distribution and systematics

Euphorbia cryptospinosa is common in the south of Ethiopia , in the south of Somalia and in the east of Kenya on gravelly soils with loose, deciduous shrub vegetation at altitudes of 120 to 1350 meters.

The species was first described in 1963 by Peter René Oscar Bally .
