The Euro-Graffiti-Union or EGU for short (with the addition Society for Street Art and Youth Culture ) was a graffiti organization in the 1980s and 1990s.

history

The association was founded in October 1986 by Peter Kreuzer in Munich. Together with the so-called “sprayer lawyer” Konrad Kittl (2nd chairman) and the personal advisor and press spokesman for the President of the Academy of Fine Arts Karsten Rothe (3rd chairman), Kreuzer wanted to give the young writers the opportunity to paint legal murals and commission work to obtain. The declared aim of the association was to enable the writers to create the youth art work of our time “in daylight and without hurry or fear”. Furthermore, workshops and events were organized for the members so that they could exchange ideas and learn new techniques. Within a short period of time, the association had around 400 members in Munich and local EGU groups were founded in other cities (e.g. Hamburg, Mainz and Dortmund).

Many of the writers active at the time were members of the EGU (including, for example, Loomit and WON ABC ). Since several writers had already come into conflict with the law in the past, they now tried legally to paint pictures and receive recognition for their skills. It was thanks to the special commitment of Kreuzer that many orders could be arranged. The clients included a. the city of Munich, the Deutsche Bundespost as well as private companies and the Catholic Church.

Despite its initial success, the association lost its importance over the years. Many members left the EGU and often returned to the illegal painting of pictures.
