Peter Kreuzer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter Kreuzer is a German professor of folklore . He gained notoriety in particular due to his commitment to the graffiti scene in the 1980s and 1990s.

Life

When a graffiti scene developed in Munich in the early 1980s, Kreuzer began to deal with this new form of youth culture and documented the sprayed pictures with a camera as part of the two-year pilot project “Everyday Life in Munich”. The result was a collection of more than 5000 photos that is stored in the Munich City Archives and is currently being digitized. During this work he explored, among other things, the motivation and scene jargon of the writers and mapped the knowledge gained in a lexicon. This lexicon presented graffiti in a general cultural context for the first time.

At that time, Kreuzer was responsible for “Everyday Life and Folk Culture” in the Munich City Museum and at the same time taught at the Department of General Sciences at Munich University of Applied Sciences . The professor gave lectures there on youth culture and other topics from the fields of folklore and literary studies. Among the audience of his lectures was, for example, the well-known writer Loomit .

In 1986 Kreuzer founded the Euro-Graffiti-Union ( EGU for short ) together with the lecturer and lawyer Konrad Kittl (so-called “ sprayer lawyer”) . In his opinion, the works of writers are just as important as the pictures of established artists. As part of the organization, the talented writers should be given the opportunity to paint murals legally and sometimes even for a fee.

After he retired, Kreuzer took over the management of the Museum of Youth Culture in Unterschleißheim from April 2003 to August 2005 .
