European Academy Otzenhausen
The European Academy Otzenhausen (EAO) is a training center and meeting place with a focus on Europe . The purpose of the academy is to conduct information, educational and research work in the field of society and politics and to promote the unification of Europe on a liberal and federal basis.
History of origin
The European Academy Otzenhausen gGmbH (formerly eV) was founded in 1954 in the Otzenhausen district of the northern Saarland municipality of Nonnweiler as a meeting place for European youth. The founder and honorary chairman of the shareholders' committee was Arno Krause († January 12, 2018). In 1959 the academy was further developed into a non-partisan and non-denominational educational and research facility for basic questions of European unification, Franco-German cooperation and political education. Over the years, other educational institutes were added: 1968 the Institute for Rhetoric and Methodology (IRM), 1971 the Institute for Regional Political Cooperation in Inner-Community Border Regions (IRI) and 1991 the Social Science Research Institute (SFI). The SFI can be seen as a leader in interdisciplinary GDR research.
In the course of its existence, the academy has developed - also structurally - into a modern competence and congress center that offers over 150 events annually, mostly with international relevance. In the meeting and conference area it has a professional technical standard (plenary, 12 group work rooms, multimedia , simultaneous interpreting system for up to five languages). The academy employs around 60 people. The managing directors are Stéphanie Bruel and Marco Wölflinger (as of January 1, 2019).
With effect from January 1, 2007 the academy was converted into the legal form of a "non-profit GmbH" (gGmbH) with the following shareholders by resolution of the general assembly : Asko Europa-Stiftung , Stiftung Europrofession, Forum for Responsibility, Foundation European Culture and Education Saarbrücken, Forum Europe Luxembourg.
