European Academy Otzenhausen (2002)

Arno Krause (born May 2, 1930 in Saarbrücken ; † January 12, 2018 there ) was the founder and chairman of the European Academy in Otzenhausen .

biography

In 1948 he completed his professional training as a banker . He then worked in this profession until 1951. In 1949, together with like-minded people, he founded the Saarland section of the European Union in Germany, of which he became the first chairman of the youth organization “Youth of the European Union in Saarland ”.

1951–1955 he was Secretary General of the "Europa-Union im Saarland". During the same period he was responsible for the planning and construction of the new “Europa-Haus Otzenhausen”; after its completion he managed the operation of this meeting place for European youth.

1957–1959 Krause was the deputy federal chairman of the “Young European Federalists Germany”. During the same period he worked as a consultant for political education in the General Secretariat of the Europa-Union Deutschland in Bonn . Since 1959 he was a member of the board of directors of the “ Institute for European Politics e. V. “(Berlin), which as a non-profit organization pursues the goal of promoting European integration . In 1962 Krause co-founded the “International Federation of European Houses” (FIME), an association of European educational institutions that operate across Europe.

In 1962 he was elected chairman of the European Union of Germany in Saarland; he held this office until 1993. In 1964 he became Vice President of the Europa-Union Deutschland.

In 1969 Krause took over the chairmanship of the supervisory board of Asko Deutsche Kaufhaus AG and in this capacity initiated the “ Asko Europe Foundation ”, which financially supported the goals of the European Academy Otzenhausen. In the following years he took on numerous other honorary positions, which were committed to the idea of a Europe growing together . From 1995 to 2012 Krause was chairman of the board of his academy.

From the earliest times, Krause's guiding principle was to promote the merging of the individual European states into a united Europe. It was clear to him that success depended on education and information for people, especially young people. His other important finding was the process of growing together. Krause implemented both findings by building the “Europahaus” in Otzenhausen in the mid-1950s.

Overview map of the European Greater Region

In addition to his pan-European guiding principle, he devoted himself increasingly to the growing together of a core European region, the Saar-Lor-Lux region . This region ( Saarland , Lorraine , Luxembourg ), together with the Belgian part of Wallonia and the adjacent western area of Rhineland-Palatinate, sees itself as the nucleus of a large-regional, cross-border new identity. Newly created political, cultural and social structures, in the creation of which Krause played a key role in numerous cases, open up the possibility for the population of this so-called Greater Region (11 million inhabitants) for daily cross-border exchange.
