The Movimento Federalista Europeo (MFE) is an Italian political association that advocates European federalism . It is the Italian section of the Union of European Federalists and thus a sister organization of the Europa-Union Germany .

founding

In Milan , Altiero Spinelli secretly organized a meeting with a group of anti-fascists , including Ernesto Rossi and Eugenio Colorni, from August 27-28, 1943 , based on the principles of the Ventotene Manifesto 1941. It is the fourth national association in Europe that (currently secretly) was founded specifically for the "unification of Europe" .

The first national association for the unification of Europe was founded in Switzerland on June 24, 1934 under the name Europa-Union . In August 1938, the Pax Union was founded in London , which was then called the Federal Union . In December 1941, the French resistance group Combat was founded, which , like these others, also aimed to create the “ United States of Europe ” or a “ European Union ”.

The MFE is the Italian section of the European non- governmental umbrella organization of the “ Union of European Federalists ” (UEF), which was founded on December 17, 1946 in Paris. The "World Federalist Movement" came into being in 1947.

Principles and Activities

The principles of the Movimento Federalista Europeo were elaborated through the analyzes and suggestions of Altiero Spinelli. These envisaged solving the crisis in Europe after the decades of fascism and the two world wars by overcoming the principle of the nation state and its absolute sovereignty . to solve world wars, but could only enable lasting peace in Europe by overcoming the absolute sovereignty of the states with the creation of a European federation .

This national federalist movement in Europe is an organization that is independent of political parties and that does not participate directly in elections. The MFE differs from the progressive conservative forces and has set itself the goal of building a united Europe on the basis of a federal constitution , following the example of the Swiss Confederation . European federalism is at the center of the ideas of this political association in order to bring about a revolutionary alternative to the other traditional ideologies .

The desired federalism should be understood as the organization of society, starting from “below” in order to be closer to the citizen at this level. The people of the districts or the local authorities should be able to exert organizational influence on the European and international level in order to participate in the formation of a European federal state .
