The European Forum of Deposit Insurers (EFDI, officially: European Forum of Deposit Insurers ) is an international non-profit association with the aim of promoting European cooperation and the exchange of information on regulatory issues in the areas of deposit insurance, investor compensation and crisis management (reorganization and liquidation of credit institutions ).

About EFDI

The European Forum of Deposit Insurers (EFDI) was founded in 2002 with the support of the European Commission. 25 founding members agreed on a common platform for the mutual exchange of information. In June 2007, EFDI was converted into the legal form of an international non-profit making association under Belgian law (Association international sans but lucratif - AISBL) after the European Commission had indicated to the association that this would be advantageous for cooperation with the European institutions. The registered office is in Brussels (B-1000 Brussels, 56 Avenue des Arts, Belgium). The office of the EFDI secretariat is located at the current EFDI chairman Dirk Cupei in the Association of German Banks in Berlin (Germany).

EFDI represents 66 full members and associated members from a total of 44 member states of the European Union and the Council of Europe. EFDI maintains close working relationships with leading European and international organizations, in particular with the European Commission, the European Central Bank ( ECB ), the European Banking Authority ( EBA ), the World Bank , the International Monetary Fund ( IMF ), the European Financial Services Roundtable (EFSR), the European Banking Federation (EBF) and the International Association of Deposit Insurers (IADI), as well as with universities.

The main task is to make a contribution to the stability of financial systems by promoting European cooperation in the field of deposit insurance. For this purpose, EFDI offers a platform u. a.

  • to share and discuss expertise and best practice on topics of common interest
  • to investigate cross-border issues including the possibilities for better cooperation among members
  • to investigate and further develop the practical application of the EU Deposit Insurance Directive.

EFDI does not make any legally binding statements on behalf of its members. The forum can express opinions on the concerns of its members or the members of a sub-group, provided that they agree. Statements or other activities of EFDI do not interfere with the sovereignty of its members.

Working bodies

To achieve its goals, EFDI can set up working groups and committees. There are currently two standing committees and five working groups. In addition, there are numerous ad hoc working groups.

EU committee

The EU Committee is EFDI's main working body. Unlike all other committees and working groups, it is a statutory body. All members from the EU member states are represented in the EU committee. Non-EU members can attend the committee meetings as observers.

The EU committee represents the interests of EFDI vis-à-vis the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council. the European Central Bank, the European Banking Authority and other EU institutions or bodies related to them. Its main task is the preparation of EFDI statements and positions on legislative projects of the European Union on deposit insurance.

By virtue of the statutes, the EFDI chairman is also the chairman of the EU committee. The EFDI board has elected Alex Kuczynski as coordinator of the EU committee.

PR and Communication Committee

The Committee for PR and Communication deals with all PR-related issues of deposit insurance. His main concerns are the exchange of experiences on crisis communication and the improvement of public information and awareness of deposit insurance in the EFDI member states. In addition, it supports the EFDI Board and the press spokesman in PR matters relating to EFDI itself, if necessary. The committee consists of the PR experts from the member organizations.

Investor Compensation Working Group

The Investor Compensation Working Group, which has existed since the very beginning of EFDI, deals with the orientation of EFDI to legislative projects of the European Union on investor compensation. Your membership includes the investor compensation schemes as well as deposit insurance schemes, which are also investor compensation schemes.

Research group

The research working group examines specific issues of deposit insurance with the aim of developing joint positions and providing recommendations and guidelines for international regulatory bodies and other stakeholders. It also supports the work of the EFDI committees by providing data, reports and surveys.
