The European Asparagus Museum in Schrobenhausen in Upper Bavaria is a special museum .

The European Asparagus Museum was initiated by Klaus Englert and initially put together by the Friends of the Schrobenhausen Museums eV in 1985 under the name of the German Asparagus Museum and opened on May 13, 1985 by the city of Schrobenhausen.

The Asparagus Museum was extensively expanded as early as 1991. Because of its far-reaching importance, it has been run as the European Asparagus Museum since then . The museum is housed in the former Amtsturm , a two-story building in the medieval city wall in the southwest of the old town. Special plows and a sample asparagus field can be seen in the open space in the castle park .

The museum was u. a. Awarded one of the ten best specialty museums in Europe by the Council of Europe in 1993. Numerous other awards followed, including - in 2006 - as one of the first “Places in the Land of Ideas” by Federal President Horst Köhler.

Collection and exhibition

The European Asparagus Museum shows the history and technology of asparagus cultivation using texts, photos and historical equipment. The exhibits from all over the world range from attachments, asparagus china and cutlery to art objects and curiosities relating to asparagus, such as asparagus representations on postage stamps and medals. The European asparagus specialist library in the city library completes the range of information on this important cultivated plant . The exhibits in the old defense tower include asparagus lid cans, z. B. Meissen porcelain , special cutlery and numerous paintings. Showpieces are a herb book from the 17th century, a bronze depiction of asparagus from Roman times and the carving work of art by the artist Rudolf Höfler “Asparagus Festival” at court.
