Europa Apotheek Venlo BV , based in Venlo not far from the German border, was founded in 2001 and serves the market in Germany, Austria and France as a mail-order pharmacy , but not the Dutch market. A ruling by the European Court of Justice on October 19, 2016 declared the discount ban for foreign pharmacies to be illegal. Since then, the pharmacy has been offering discounts on prescription drugs again.
Since mid-2010, Europa Apotheek Venlo has been 100 percent owned by Medco Health Solutions . the leading American company in the health sector. In February 2010 the company Shop Apotheke Europe was integrated into the activities of the Dutch mail order pharmacy. The shop-apotheke.com brand was retained. In cooperation with the drugstore chain dm-drogerie markt , Europa Apotheek Venlo offered an order and pick-up service (so-called pharmacy pick-up ) in the branches of the drugstore until the end of 2012 . In December 2012, the majority of the company's shares were bought back through a management buy-out .
In 2015, Shop Apotheke Europe was spun off from Europa Apotheek Venlos and listed on the stock exchange. In September 2017, the shop pharmacy took over the former parent company Europa Apotheek Venlo in return for the issue of new shares.
The company website was switched off in July 2019 and since then Europa Apotheek Venlo has been offering the entire range of products and services via the parent company's website.
