European Food Information Council

The European Food Information Council ( English Eufic shortly EUFIC ) is a non-profit organization based in Brussels . It was founded in 1995 with the aim of providing the media, nutritionists, educators and consumers with scientifically sound information about food safety and quality as well as health and nutrition .

EUFIC is supported by companies in the European food and beverage industry and by the European Commission. The EUFIC does not represent any product or company and, according to its own statements, does not act as a lobbyist in the legislative or regulatory area. The topics covered are (selection):

Founded in 1995, the non-governmental organization is led by a board of directors elected by the member companies. Laura Fernández Celemín is the general manager .

The EUFIC members are Abbott Nutrition , Bunge Europe , Cargill , Cereal Partners Worldwide ( Joint Venture between General Mills and Nestlé ), Coca-Cola , Dow Seeds , DSM , Ferrero , General Mills, Mondelēz Europe , Mars , Nestlé, PepsiCo , Pınar Et (meat wholesalers), Tereos (sugar manufacturers), Ülker and Unilever .

The organization Food Watch called EUFIC because of this structure as "a who's who of the international food companies" and provides the credibility of EUFIC studies in question. Such a study is intended, for example, to influence a current legislative process in order to prevent the EU- wide introduction of traffic light labeling of foods and even to ban them on a national basis.

The organization is financed from EU public funds , membership fees and sales from public contracts or the sale of its publications. In 2016, she had a total of € 1,699,486 available; of this, € 476,746 came from EU funds, € 1,067,161 from membership fees and € 10,587 generated by the EUFIC through its own invoicing. She received € 78,092 from the Coca-Cola Foundation and € 66,900 from the European Palm Oil Alliance .

Projects

  • Food Today is EUFIC's bimonthly newsletter (in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish) that covers a variety of topics from food safety to healthy eating and living.
  • Latest Science provides subscribers with an easy-to-use summary of key publications in academic research on nutrition, health and food safety.
  • The EUFIC manages research programs on consumer understanding of nutritional information on food labels and risk communication.
  • The EUFIC participates in the platform for action on nutrition, physical activity and health of the Directorate-General for Health and Consumer Protection (DG SANCO) and in the consultation platform for stakeholders of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
  • The EUFIC contributes to a number of EU-funded research projects.
