The European Institute for Innovation and Technology ( EIT , also European Innovation and Technology Institute ) is a foundation of the EU with the aim of strengthening the cooperation of the most efficient institutes, universities and industrial research centers. In 2010 the EIT started its work from its headquarters in Budapest . José Manuel Leceta was director of the EIT until summer 2014. Since August 1st 2014 it has been led by Martin Kern as interim director. The institute was funded with EUR 308.7 million up to the end of 2013; the budget for 2014–2020 is EUR 2,700 million.

The Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KIC)

The EIT itself coordinates the work and funding of the so-called Knowledge and Innovation Communities (Knowledge and Innovation Communities, KICs), which have a real cumulative points for the direct cooperation of its members regionally clustered institutions and enterprises.

The tasks of the KICs, which are independent of the EIT in their internal structure, are the development of new products and services, the training of future founders and the founding of start-ups. This aims to improve Europe's competitiveness. KICs are to be financed over a period of seven to fifteen years from funds from the EIT and then continue to exist independently through income from their own activities. The partner organizations in higher education, research and innovation creating a KIC must come from at least two countries; at least three partner organizations must participate, with a KIC usually being applied for by a consortium with significantly more partners . Each KIC is active in the three areas of innovation, entrepreneurship and education, whereby academic degrees and degrees awarded by partner universities according to national regulations can also receive a so-called EIT label after an accreditation process on the part of the EIT.

Since the founding of the first three KICs on December 17, 2009 on the topics of climate change (EIT Climate-KIC), energy (EIT InnoEnergy) and information and communication technology (EIT Digital) in 2010, two more were on health (EIT Health) and Raw Materials (EIT RawMaterials). However, the latter was only founded in 2016 together with the likewise new KIC (EIT Food), which deals with the topic of sustainable food supply. In 2019, the youngest KICs to date began on the topics of manufacturing (EIT Manufacturing) and mobility in urban areas (EIT Urban Mobility). The next KIC is to start in the next few years on the subject of creative industries. The completely independent KICs have different organizational and management structures, but are mostly organized as an association in which the member organizations come together. They receive funding from the EIT through their business plan, which they then either use for their own activities or pass on to their partners.

Several hundred companies, universities and organizations are currently participating as partners in the eight KICs, with numerous institutions such as TU Darmstadt , TU Munich , TU Delft and ETH Zurich participating in several KICs.

EIT Manufacturing

The task of EIT Manufacturing is to bring European manufacturing actors together in innovation ecosystems in order to create globally competitive and sustainable manufacturing. A pan-European competition was organized for this purpose, to which institutions and companies could apply. In 2018, the winners of the pan-European competition for EIT Manufacturing were announced. 50 partners from 17 countries were selected. The German partners include the Technical University of Darmstadt , Volkswagen , Kuka , Siemens , the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence , Festo , the Technical University of Braunschweig , the Bremen Institute for Production and Logistics and Stryker. EIT Manufacturing will be set up in Paris and EIT Manufacturing Innovation Hubs will also be located in the cities of Bilbao , Darmstadt , Gothenburg , Milan and Vienna . The EIT Manufacturing Innovation Hubs are responsible for partners from several countries. B. the EIT Manufacturing Innovation Hub in Darmstadt will be set up by the partner institutions and companies from Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.

EIT Climate-KIC

EIT Climate-KIC works in four main areas. Urban Transitions develops concepts for climate-friendly cities that are also highly resilient to the effects of climate change. Sustainable Land Use develops concepts to make agriculture and food production more climate-friendly and to integrate more forests into the landscape. Sustainable Production Systems is working , to make the production of climate-friendly, to reduce emissions from industry and to strengthen the regional economy and on the implementation of approaches of circular economy . Decision Metrics and Finance is concerned with integrating the topic of climate into financial markets. To this end, green plants should be promoted and the risks that climate change entails should be made known, e.g. For example, tools have been published that can be used to simulate disasters. In the field of education, the EIT Climate-KIC runs numerous large international programs every year in cooperation with its partners, such as the Summer School The Journey or the Climathon , a hackathon that takes place on the same day in numerous cities worldwide.

organs

The 18-member board of directors is to steer the EIT and elect, name and evaluate the KICs. The KICs send members to the Board of Directors for a limited period of up to six years. The five-member Executive Committee makes decisions between Board meetings. The chairman of the executive committee is also chairman of the board of directors. The director , elected for four years, is responsible for financial and human resource management and is accountable to the board of directors.
