Like many other parliaments in Europe, the European Parliament set up a body for science-based advice on the complex social, ecological and economic consequences of modern technologies and research at the end of the 1980s. At the European Parliament, this advisory and consultation process is organized by the STOA (Scientific Technology Options Assessment) committee, a parliamentary body made up of 15 members who represent various parliamentary committees. In view of the increasing importance of European research and technology policy, the European Parliament has decided that the activities of STOA should be supported by permanent cooperation with a group of institutions with appropriate expertise in the field of technology assessment.

From May 2009 for a second period of three years, the European Technology Assessment Group (ETAG) will carry out TA studies for the STOA committee. ETAG's activities for Parliament focus on studies in the following fields: transport , ICT and information society , nanotechnology , life sciences and quality of life, and agriculture , food and biotechnology .
