Eutychios

Eutychios (* around 512 in Theium, Phrygia ; † April 5, 582 ) was Patriarch of Constantinople (552-565 and 577-582). He is venerated as a saint in the Orthodox churches and the Roman Catholic Church . His feast day is April 6th (Orthodox).

Life

There are extensive records of his collaborator Eustathios about Eutychios. Eutychios' father, Alexander, was a general under Belisarius .

At the age of 30, Eutychios became a monk in Amasea . He became archimandrite there . In 552 he became Patriarch of Constantinople at the instigation of Emperor Justinian . At the time of the election, Pope Vigilius was in Constantinople. On May 5, 553 the fifth ecumenical council began in Constantinople , in which both participated. It ended on June 2nd and, as Justinian wished, rejected the so-called Three Chapters , three writings suspected of Nestorianism .

Eutychios consecrated a new building of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople in 562 . In 564 there was a theological argument with Justinian. This demanded that Eutychios recognize the doctrine of the Aphthartodocetae . He refused and was arrested on January 22nd, 565. He was held in various locations.

In 577 he was reappointed patriarch with the support of Emperor Justin II . In 582 he died at the age of 70.
