Euxinograd ( Bulgarian Евксиноград / Evksinograd ) is the former summer residence of the Bulgarian tsars on the Black Sea .

location

The facility is located 10 km northeast of the city center of the port city of Varna , 2 km southwest of Constantine and Helena .

Surname

The current name comes from Princess Marie Louise in 1893 and is derived from the Greek "Euxeinos Pontos", which means "Black Sea" and from the Bulgarian "град / grad", which means "city": Euxinograd - city on the Black Sea.

history

In 1880 the Bulgarian Prince Alexander Battenberg I visited the monastery “Saints Constantine and Elena”. Enthusiastic about the nature in Varna and its surroundings, he decided to build his summer residence there, where the ruins of the monastery “Saint Dimitar” stood - two kilometers southwest of the monastery “Saints Constantine and Elena”.

The castle after the First World War

The monastery "Des Saint Dimitar" was converted into the residence of the prince and later into the royal residence, which was first known under the name "Sandrowo" and later under the name Euxinograd. Only the memory of the monastery remained of the original monastery "Des Saint Dimitar", at this point there is only a small chapel in the current residence. The choice for the location of the residence fell on the monastery “Saint Dimitar” and not the monastery “Saints Constantine and Elena”, so that the holiday resort developed in the vicinity of the second.

The state later bought the residence for 1,400,000 golden leva and gave it to Tsar Ferdinand I as a gift. On September 12, 1917, his second wife, Tsarina Eleonore, died here .

The Euxinograd wine cellar is as famous as the castle. It was built in 1891 for the royal family and their guests and is located on two floors below the ground floor. The largest barrels are up to 3145 liters. Nowadays the wine cellar produces around 120 bottles of wine. Connoisseurs can taste 12 types of white wine and 7 types of brandy, the best of which is Euxignak.

The Bulgarian architect Georgi Fingow restored the monastery of St. Dimitars in 1906.

architecture

The neo-baroque complex was built according to the plans of the Austrian architect Viktor Rumpelmayer . The total area of Euxinograd is approx. 800 ha. 550 ha belong to the park, which was mainly laid out by the French dendrologist Neumeyer. Among the sights are 310 species of plants, some of which were introduced from the south of France.

Also worth seeing are the horse stable, the gable , which was partially introduced in 1890 by the French castle Saint-Cloud , and the sundial that was given to King Ferdinand by the British Queen Victoria .
