Eva Bourke

Eva Bourke (born 1946 ) is an Irish writer and translator of German origin.

Life

Eva Bourke's family has Austrian roots. She grew up first in a Bavarian village and then in a small town, where she was one of the few girls in her year to attend the humanistic grammar school. She studied German and art history at Munich University. Towards the end of the 1970s, she moved with her husband, the Irish German studies specialist Eoin Bourke , and their three children from Munich to Ireland and have lived in Galway ever since . One son is the artist Benjamin de Burca, who was born in Munich in 1975 .

Bourke writes in English and has published several volumes of poetry. Her translations of Irish poets into German have appeared in the magazines die horen , Eiswasser and Akzente , among others . She translated a selection of poems by Elisabeth Borchers into English and the poems for two anthologies of Irish poetry into German. Bourke is a member of Aosdána .
