The last invisible boy

Evan Kuhlman got the idea for the book The Last Invisible Boy in a dream. He wondered what kind of story this boy could have and why he had become invisible. The sudden death of his father in a plane crash initially throws twelve-year-old Finn Garret completely off track. His hair is getting lighter and lighter and his skin is also losing color. Finn is convinced that he will gradually break up. Could it be that he has to leave because he couldn't save his father? Or does Finn become a kind of ghost in order to be able to see him again? Finn writes all these and other considerations in his diary. But he also collects memories of the many special experiences with his father. He immortalizes some of it in cartoons. Funny and thoughtful, imaginative and serious, he approaches the "terrible day that changed everything" with ever greater courage. He develops the frightening idea that one day he will become invisible. In the diary it becomes clear in several facets how Finn copes with his grief. The diary entries alternate between the present and past experiences. Line drawings and cartoons loosen up Finn's entries, and the impression of authenticity of the writer and the diary itself emerges .

Nick Perfect - brother in the mail

In Nick Perfect - Brother in the Mail , Ben Rambeau opens a package that was actually intended for his father Matthew. In the package he finds a robot that looks exactly like himself. The robot calls itself an "artificial, genetically optimized, cybernetic integrated, bionically modified life form" with the model number NR M 2000-B. Ben calls him Nick without further ado.

Press review

The Last Invisible Boy (2010)

  • Roswita Buddeus-Budde in the Süddeutsche Zeitung : "In Evan Kuhlman's debut novel The Last Invisible Boy (translated congenially by Uwe-Michael Gutzschhahn) a boy has to cope with the sudden death of his father. He would like to drift off into another sphere and around him again "Here's something else I know for sure: If the whole world was mine, I would love to give it to me for a single visit with Dad in his shop or anywhere else. I would also give the whole galaxy." At one step he tries to understand his condition, to find a way to become more visible again, because his mother cannot help him with his own grief, and at school he is only admired like an alien - except for his friend Melanie, who simply is only there who manages to ground him in normal life and assures that she likes him in whatever guise. dtv-junior starts its hardcover program with this title. A very ambitious project, i hen this book, with its literary power, breaks common children's literature. "
  • Beate Mainka in the cover culture magazine : "Seldom has the subject of death been dealt with with such ease in children's books. The wonderful picture book The Best Funerals in the World by Ulf Nilsson with the wonderfully cheeky illustrations by Eva Eriksson is similarly fresh and beyond all concern education. Kuhlmans The story thrives on the depth of focus with which he traces the inner workings of Finn and translates it into literature. A wonderfully light book on an extremely serious subject - that is one of the things that the children's book world needs! "

Nick Perfect - Brother by Mail (2012)

“The second children's book by Evan Kuhlman [...] published in Germany is far more complex than it initially appears. Little by little, with the clever and entertaining conversational tone with which he lets Ben tell in a rather funny way, he opens up the heavy burden that the whole family carries with him. [...] As in his German-language debut The Last Invisible Boy [...] Evan Kuhlman manages to tell a touching story behind the story with his humorous and for boys irresistible narrative tone [...]. The imaginative and imaginative frame story about the possibility of developing an artificial human being is extremely appealing; especially since it is conveyed logically and thoroughly in all details. Evan Kuhlman once again proves his skill in staging his actors and their everyday world in a very lively, almost cinematic way. It seems to tell so effortlessly and full of esprit that even older readers are carried away by the turbulent course of the story. "
