The Evangelical Church in Bensberg is a church that was built during the time of National Socialism . It is in Bensberg , a district of Bergisch Gladbach .

prehistory

From 1840 Schloss Bensberg was a Prussian cadet institute . An evangelical clergyman was available for the pastoral care of the cadets. Daily devotions and Sunday services in the palace chapel were the rule. The castle chapel was also available to the Bensberg Protestant Christians as a meeting room.

After the National Socialists seized power in 1933, the palace became a National Political Educational Institution . There was no more space for a prayer room and in 1935 a service was held in the castle for the last time.

Building history

The foundation stone of the Evangelical Church in Bensberg was laid on September 5, 1937. The tensions between the Church and the National Socialists are hinted at in the foundation stone's document: “At a time of state recovery and the struggle for Jesus Christ and his Church, we laid trust God's gracious help laid the foundation for this church. May she help that God's kingdom come. "

The simple hall was built based on the specifications of the state building inspectorate in line with the baroque Bensberg Palace. The architect was Otto Schönhagen from Koblenz. The shape of the tower construction is similar to the towers of the castle. On June 26, 1938, the church was inaugurated with a solemn service.

The interior was rotated 180 degrees in 1973, so that the central main entrance became the sacristy door and the two former back entrances became main entrances. In 2003 there was a comprehensive renovation. The architects Jürgen Kreft and Marianne Vogt-Werling took care of a complete redesign of the interior. A special feature is the cross installation on the east wall. Two large wooden surfaces that are unevenly wide work together like two halves of a cross. An artistic composition in which the cross appears as a light cutout. A large window in the background enhances the light effect.

Parish

The church is one of four churches in the Protestant parish of Bensberg. There are other church buildings in Herkenrath , Kippekausen and Refrath .
