The Evangelical Parish Church in Lindenfels in the Bergstrasse district in Hesse was built in 1825, but goes back to a late medieval predecessor.

history

The church in the northeast corner of the medieval town center goes back to the late medieval church of the town, around which the burial place of the inhabitants was located at that time. The early history of the old church is only known fragmentarily. In the High Middle Ages there was no church in Lindenfels, only the castle chapel of Lindenfels Castle , which was also used by the residents of the village. In 1403 a chapel in the village is documented, which was probably a branch of Schlierbach . In 1417 it was allowed to collect to build a parish church. It seems to have been erected soon afterwards, as the collection for building work was already taking place again towards the end of the 15th century. In the 16th century and later, the church shared the eventful history of the Reformation in the Electoral Palatinate. Building material from the chapel in Lichtenklingen , which burned down in 1563, could have been used for further construction work .

An engraving by Matthäus Merian shows what the old church looked like in the 17th century . It was a single-nave building with a three-sided choir and a square roof turret with a pointed helmet. There have been reports about the dilapidation of the old church since the late 16th century without any fundamental renovation. In 1763 the church was one of the oldest and most dilapidated in the country , but in 1768 it was extended to an adjacent property acquired by the Pretlack family and repaired in 1795 after a roof fire. Until 1817 there were further renovation and expansion plans before the decision was made to demolish it and build a new one. However, it took several more years to get there. The old church was finally demolished in 1823.

The new church was built in 1825 according to plans by Georg Moller . Moller also played a key role in the subsequent installation of a gallery in 1829. An organ was purchased in 1837.

description

The church is a classical hall building with a gable roof , on the narrow side of which in the west a slender square church tower with a pointed helmet is built. The base of the tower serves as the entrance and vestibule of the nave , which is spanned by a flat ceiling. The interior of the church is still largely from the construction period.

A Gothic sandstone basin and a stone relief with the head of Christ from the gable surface of a late Gothic sacrament house, which was built at the entrance of the Baureneck house, have been preserved from the old church .
